Batman Story Book Annual

Published: 1967

This is a curious one. The front cover is spoiled by the presence of Robin the Boy Wonder (as in boy, I wonder why they ever put such a tosser in the strip) not once but twice. It’s also somewhat marred by the fact that Batman looks like a bank manager on the way to a fancy dress party. And why are they both grinning like that? I know it was the sixties but Batman woudn’t have been popping pills, would he?

The back cover, on the other hand, is fantastic. The bold slash of pink cutting through the dark, the Batmobile hanging a tight curve. The trail of dust kicking up. You can almost hear the tyres squeal. If the front cover had been anywhere near the quality of the back, this would have been a great annual.
